Dubai Culture
Experience real Emirati traditions and heritage
Traditional Souks
Dubai's traditional markets give you a look at real trading history. The Gold Souk is full of jewellery shops with amazing displays whilst the Spice Souk has lovely smells from all the spices. These covered markets are comfortable to walk around even when it is hot outside. Children enjoy seeing all the different things but families should keep an eye on young ones because it can get busy. Most shop owners speak English and are happy to bargain. Going in the morning between 9 AM and 12 PM is best because there are fewer people and it is cooler.

Tips for Families
Keep children close in busy areas. Bring water. Short visits work best for young children.
Heritage Sites
Al Fahidi Historical District has old Emirati buildings with traditional wind towers and narrow walking streets. The Dubai Museum is inside Al Fahidi Fort and shows the city's history with displays and old objects. Children like the life size models that show pearl diving and Bedouin life. The area is easy to walk around with shaded paths. A visit takes about 90 minutes which is not too long for families. The nearby textile souk is also interesting without being too much for young children.

Local Customs and Etiquette
Knowing about local customs helps you be respectful when visiting. Wearing modest clothes is important when visiting old areas or religious places. Women should cover shoulders and knees whilst men should avoid shorts in traditional areas. During Ramadan, do not eat or drink in public during the day. Always ask before taking photos of local people. These simple things show respect and help everyone including children learn about the culture.
Dress Code
Cover shoulders and knees in old areas. Beachwear is only for beaches and pools.
Behaviour
Keep public affection to a minimum. Ask before taking photos of people.
